HOW TO: Back-up and Transfer iTunes Files

iTunes BackupBacking-up and transferring iTunes files from one computer to another can be a simple process. Apple provides 5 methods for users to try. Here’s a brief overview of each.

1. Home Sharing

This method works when two computers/devices are connected to the same network and have iTunes. By opening iTunes on both computers/devices and selecting the home sharing option from the advanced options, iTunes will use the network connection to move files from one computer/device to the other.

This means that the old files will remain on the old computer/device. If they still need to be backed-up, then saving to an external drive, or CD/DVD is a good option.

2. External Drive

By using an external drive, users can transfer all their files onto it. Connect the drive to the device and locate the iTunes Media folder. From there, save/copy all the files onto the drive. When finished, import the files onto the new device.

With this option, the files remain on the external drive. Users can retrieve them at any point or continue to add to the external drive for added protection. To save on external hard drives, look for a HP coupon code

3. Transferring Purchases

More restrictive, this option gives users the ability transfer only content that was purchased from the iTunes Store in most cases. All content can be transferred from a computer to an iOS device, but not the other way around. It works with most of the devices, but is limited in how much it will transfer. Other content will need to be transferred by other methods.

Using an Apple ID and either an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or another computer, open iTunes and select Authorize Computer from the store menu. Connect the device that contains the files to the device where they will be moved. When it prompts, click “Transfer Purchases.”

4. Windows Migration Assistant

This option is meant for those wanting to transfer files from devices with different operating systems, although it’s mainly meant for computers. iTunes offers instructions for transfers between Windows and Mac OS X Lion, and others through its site. However, the Windows Migration Assistant through iTunes will instruct a user on how to transfer.

Please note, this means the old device serves as the back-up.

5. CDs/DVDs

Like an external drive, this method will back-up and transfer your files for you.

Open iTunes and then insert the CD/DVD into a writing-capable drive. Create a backup disk using iTunes. When finished, open iTunes on the new device and insert the disk. When iTunes asks to restore from the disk, click “Restore”.
