Samsung To Discontinue Its Symbian Support Service

Samsung and SymbianSamsung officially announced that they will discontinue its Symbian support service beginning December 31 2010. They informed all their developers regarding this and they would remove all Symbian content by year’s end. Earlier Sony Ericsson declared that they are going to use Android & Windows Phone 7 and going to quit Symbian Platform.

People this is not a big deal since Samsung has recently focused more on manufacturing Android-based devices. For example Galaxy S and also they are concentrating on their own mobile platform, bada. Samsung’s upcoming tablet, Samsung Galaxy tab is also powered by Android. Even Nokia once said they will use Symbian only for their cheap phones and pursue MeeGo for the N-Series.

Though Symbian is one of the widely used platforms, it is still having big problems from Android and other platforms. Symbians fans hopes the next two iterations of the OS which includes Symbian^3 and Symbian^4, would bring some significant improvements and make good changes.

Like Sony Ericsson, we believe Samsung might still be a member of Symbian Foundation.

Though Nokia supports Symbian as of now, we can’t expect this to be permanent. What will be the future of Symbian? Share your opinions below as comments.

  1. With Android, Samsung has easily shoot off to much popularity, specially with the Galaxy Series. This couldn’t have been possible with Symbian ofcourse.
Being a symbian user, i too feel that buying a symbian phone was one of my lamest decision. If you see some popular symbian fansites, most of the users there are asking if they can port android or change their homescreen atleast. Nobody is liking symbian.

And No i dont think Nokia should use Symbian anymore when they have Meego which has more potential than it

  2. To me i think symbian can never die just like that. Even if all other phone manufacturer don’t want to use it Nokia will still be using it. Thanks a lot for the comment.

  4. Since the smartphone fever is gripping the world, I don’t think there will be a future for symbian mobiles.

  5. Nokia will never or cant totally discontinue Symbian as it has a large application base. May be not in high range phones but Nokia will surely continue using Symbian in low range phones.
