Setup Custom Domain Name For Medium

Setup Custom Domain Name For Medium.com Blogs

As we all know, Medium.com is one of the most popular platforms for creating blogs and sharing information. I have read at least 50+ quality articles there, people started to prefer Medium.com over Blogger.com and WordPress.com these days, thanks to their minimalistic look. Quite recently, they also enabled the ‘custom domain’ feature. So instead of medium.com/@hellboundbloggers.com, you can now use your custom domain name like hellboundbloggers.com itself. Below we shared the steps on how to setup a custom domain name for Medium.com blogs.

A CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME ADDS MORE VALUE TO YOUR BLOG, LEARN WHY HERE:

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Custom Domain For Your Blog

If you haven’t purchased a domain name yet, you can go to GoDaddy (our recommended service) for getting your desired domain name (we would suggest .com to begin with).

Setup Custom Domain Name For Medium.com

Step 1: Register an account on Medium.com if you haven’t. Finalize a publication URL (something like this) and keep it ready.

Step 2: Now send an email to customdomains@medium.com with your publication URL and your custom domain (say ‘hellboundbloggers.com’) or subdomain URL (say ‘blog.hellboundbloggers.com’).

Step 3: Medium.com will arrange some records (A & CNAME) for you to enter. They’ll share with you 12 A records that you should add to your domain or subdomain name. You need to create a separate A record for each IP address.

To update the ‘A Record’, go to your domain registrar (say GoDaddy) and navigate to the ‘DNS’ zone of the desired domain name. Go to the ‘A Record’ section and click on the ‘Edit’ icon. You’ll get a popup like this, enter all the 12 A Records here individually.

Step 4: Medium.com will also provide you the CNAME Record details. In their official page, they mentioned “It’s important that the CNAME’s domain side has the long string plus either .domain.com or .subdomain.domain.com”, so you can prepare according to that.

Now, go to your ‘CNAME Record’ section and click on the ‘Edit’ icon. You’ll get a popup like this, enter the required CNAME details here.

That’s all you have to do now. Just wait for some time and you can access/use your Medium.com blog with your custom domain name.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Can I Monetize My Medium.com Blog With Custom Domain Name?

A1. You can’t utilize your Medium.com blog like you do with your WordPress.org blog, but still, you can use this space to promote your (or other) products and earn money through that. But Medium.com is strict about quality content, they don’t want you to spam and write posts focussed primarily at affiliate marketing.

Q2. Can I Use Google Analytics For My Medium.com Blog?

A2. Not possible at the moment. But they do have their own stats section where you can track the views, reads, recommends, and referrals for your publication posts.

Why Should I Use Custom Domain Names?

First, it’s free. I mean, not like WordPress.com, where you have to pay extra for using a custom domain name there. Second, it looks clean and professional, which means you are serious about your content. Third, it helps you to brand and increase your digital presence. Fourth, domain names are cheap, you can register a .com domain name (new account) for almost as cheap as $1-$5 for the first year. Fifth, why not?
