Google initially debuted Goo.gl URL shortener last Decemeber. It indeed came out as a feature integrated into Google products like FeedBurner and others.
Though there were some Google Chrome extensions and other web services on the Internet to shorten URLs using Goo.gl. But now Goo.gl is now open to the public. Goo.gl has features like automatic spam detection and it has nearly 100% uptime since their initial launch. You can use your Google account to view URL history, traffic sources, referrers and visitor profiles for countries, browsers and platforms.
Earlier McAfee officially announced the launch of their own URL Shortener — McAf.ee. Since we are dealing with Google here we can expect some good features in terms of stability, speed and security.
Big companies started making their own URL shorteners, will this create an impact on professional URL shorteners like bit.ly and others. Share your opinions below.
Interesting responses here. It seems to me that many of the services are integrated in websites in a way that could easily be changed but that most people will probably not bother to change. So that means most of the existing big players will be just fine.
http://tinyurl.com/ , which is one of the oldest, says that they are serving “billions every month.” You probably won’t see that disappear “in a few months.”
And I’m sure some people do not like Google and will just never touch that stuff!
Ah! About Google checking the destination, most certainly, they have all the info in their database already! They may actually show you a page in case the link points to a website that has a known XSS attack or anything of the sort. I do not think that they will kill your account if you put “the wrong link in,” unless you do that all day long.

the drawback is , you cant choose the end url , i got my iphoneblog url changed to goo.gl/lydl . now how does that sound relevant 🙁
google is getting in every field… used to prefer McAf.ee or bit.ly…..
Mcaf.ee has a strong point . Its an antivirus firm , so people may think , all links are scanned and they need not worry …. BITLY … may your soul …. rest in peace …R.I.P …lol 😛

This will surely affect the professional URL shortners for sure, but it wont affect much since they have established themselves in the market.
Sathish , you’ll see url shortners like bitly dying in a few months . People trust google. If they can remember goo.gl , bitly days are gone ….
What if Google will stop the use of shortening bad URLs? Then most of the users will not use because URL shorteners are used for converting illegal links to short so that users will visit atleast.

google want to dominate all the services on the web.
Google’s goo.gl url shortener will surely impact other url shortening services. The main reason will be the goodwill of Google. People recommend using Google services. I myself is using goo.gl url shortener instead of others.

Till now Bit.ly is my favorite. I dont think goo.gl can bit them .. It will take time..
I have heard this news earlier in some other forum before reading your article. Before i was using tinyurl for shorting my links but i think i need to give Google a try. 😉
Yes, you can. But I think Google will not allow spamming using google account and we must take care of any such links.
