HOW TO: Get Logoless YouTube Player

YouTube Player LogoNow YouTube provides us the option to remove their cute branding logo in the control bar of the YouTube video player. You just need to make a minor change.

At the end of the video URL in your embed code, just add the code ?modestbranding=1 and the player will show without the YouTube logo in the control bar.

<iframe width=”620″ height=”370″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/oFTfAdauCOo?modestbranding=1” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Below I have embedded Cars 2 Trailer from Disney Pixar – Without and With Logo.

YouTube Video Player – Without Logo

YouTube Video Player – With Logo

Though they have the option to remove the logo, still there will be a small “YouTube” text label which will show up in the upper-right corner of a paused video when you hover over the player.

HOW TO: Setup Google Analytics To Check Site Speed

Google Analytics quite recently added a new feature for checking your site speed and page loading time, awesome isn’t it? It is not an automatic upgrade, so you need to tweak your Google Analytics default tracking code to enable this feature. Now it will be easy to improve your site’s loading speed.

Site Speed Google Analytics

Add Site Speed Code in Google Analytics

To get the new site speed report, add the following line to your analytics code

_gaq.push([‘_trackPageLoadTime’]);

Now this is how your code will look like this [sample code] :

<script type=”text/javascript”>
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push([‘_setAccount’, ‘UA-XXXXX-X’]);
_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’]);
_gaq.push([‘_trackPageLoadTime’]);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true;
ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’;
var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script>

This will be really useful for webmasters and bloggers to detect which landing pages are slow. Also you can find the cause and fix it earlier since Google considers site loading speed as a key factor in SERPs.

HOW TO: Add Your Blog/Website To AllTop Easily

AllTopAlltop can be described as the “online magazine rack” of the web. It collects the headlines of the latest stories from the best sites and blogs that cover a topic.

They group these collections — “aggregations” — into individual web pages. It is a popular news aggregator kind of thing. Earlier HBB was featured on AllTop for several topics.

It is really simple to add your blog or website to AllTop, if it has good content with good posting frequency. Earlier it was difficult to get listed, now they are constantly approving all the entries I believe.

Go to AllTop Submissions, where you can easily suggest a site for AllTop. You need to fill a form in order to submit. Just make sure you fill all the boxes with relevant answers.

#1 AllTop Topic : There are lots of topics like Blogging, Tech, Photography, Sports and on. Search there and mention the relevant topics there. [Required]

#2 Site/Blog Name : Enter your website or blog name here. [Required]

#3 Site/Blog URL : Enter the full URL of your website or blog here. [Required]

#4 RSS Feed Address : This one is optional, AllTop normally picks the default Feed URL.

#5 Site/blog owner’s name : The owner/administrator’s name should be mentioned.

#6 Owner’s Email Address : Enter the official or personal email address of the site owner here. AllTop will use this to contact the owner regarding the submission.

#7 Comments : If you like to say or mention anything related to your submission, you have 250 characters to do that.

HOW TO: Get Your Site Listed In DMOZ Directory

The Open Directory Project (ODP), also known as Dmoz, is a multilingual open content directory of World Wide Web links. It is owned by Netscape, but it is constructed and maintained by a community of volunteer editors (via Wikipedia).

If you wish to have good page rank and search engine traffic, then you should try DMOZ. This is one of the most important directories out there.

DMOZ

First check whether your site is capable of listing. Sites will not be simply listed there. If your site contains little or no original content, then you can’t get listed.

Some Things To Keep In Mind Before Submitting :

#1 – Sites with overlapping and repetitive content won’t be listed.

#2 – Do not disguise your submission and submit the same URL more than once.

Example : https://hellboundbloggers.com/ and https://hellboundbloggers.com/about/

#3 – Web addresses that redirects to another address should be avoided.

#4 – Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.

#5 – If you site has Adult content, then submit to the appropriate category under Adult.

#6 – Don’t submit sites consisting largely of affiliate links.

#7 – Do not submit your site more than once in the directory.

#7 – If you are lucky enough, your site would have already been listed in DMOZ directory, so search in the directory before submitting.

Steps For Submitting Your Site In DMOZ Directory :

#1 – Find the Right Category : Find the single best category for your site. You should choose a relevant category since sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed. Some categories do not have “suggest URL”, so you should find some other relevant category.

#2 – Suggest URL : After selecting the category, go directly to that category on dmoz.org and then click “suggest URL.”

Suppose if your site falls under ‘Category : Internet : Resources’ then go there and click ‘suggest URL’ link at the top navbar.

Suggest URL DMOZ

Now you need to fill a simple site submission form.

There you need to enter the Site URL, Title of Site, Site Description, and Your Email Address. That’s all.

Note : Site Description should not be promotional. It should be an objective and well written description.

An ODP editor will review your submission to determine whether to include it in the directory. Depending on factors such as the volume of submissions to the particular category, it may take several weeks or more before your submission is reviewed.

And if your site is not accepted, DMOZ says this,

We are not a search engine and pride ourselves on being highly selective. We don’t
accept all sites, so please don’t take it personally should your site not be accepted.

HOW TO: Get Your Site Featured On Bing News

Bing NewsBing News (previously Live Search News) is a part of Microsoft’s Bing search engine. It is a search engine and aggregator specifically for news articles through a variety of trusted and credible internet news sources, including New York Times, Washington Post and Reuters (via Wikipedia).

Bing News is one of the popular News Aggregators owned by Microsoft and it gets good number of visitors everyday. Other popular News Aggregators include Yahoo! News, Google News, and Techmeme. All these sites have some option to submit your site, but Bing is quite different. Getting your site listed on Bing News is not an easy thing since they don’t provide a direct option to submit sites (as of now).

Getting Featured On Bing News [Simple Steps]

#1 – Though there is no direct option, Brett Yount (Ex-employee of Bing) from the Bing Webmaster Center said the way to be included in Bing News is a manual process. You just need to email bns@microsoft.com and wait for their reply.

Suppose if you didn’t get a reply from them, Brett suggests this,

“There should be confirmation from the review team. If you did not get one, I suggest emailing them again.”

And you will probably get a reply like this from Bing,

“Please be assured that your submission is now noted and will be considered in a fair qualifying process.”

#2 – Submit your site to Bing, if you haven’t. Because first we want their web crawler, BingBot, to be familiar with our blogs URL and permalinks. Also recommended to submit to popular search engines.

#3 – Submit your Sitemap to Bing. Make use of Bing Webmaster Tools to improve your site’s SEO, submit your sites and XML-based Sitemaps to Bing

HOW TO: Get Your Site Featured On Yahoo! News

Yahoo! NewsYahoo! News is one of the most popular news aggregators out there. It gets millions of visitors now and then, and it will be great if your site gets a place there.

Think about the traffic and huge exposure. Yahoo! News works almost similar to Google News and Techmeme. Main stories, which you can see on front page, are generated by content partners indeed.

#3 – Yahoo! Site Explorer : Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search. View the most popular pages from any site, dive into a comprehensive site map, and find pages that link to that site or any page. Add your site/blog there.

#4 – Yahoo! News Source Form : Yahoo! likes to have your opinions too. Just fill this form and make sure you satisfy Yahoo! with all your answers and sources. Finally if your blog is approved/accepted, they’ll contact you.

Getting Featured On Yahoo! News [Tips]

You don’t need to work so hard to get featured, instead just follow the normal rules. I already mentioned those tips on getting featured on Google News and Techmeme articles. Below I mentioned 3 common tips for getting featured.

  • Original Content : Unless your content is unique and SEO friendly, you can’t get featured. Also avoid duplicate posts.
  • Multi-Authored : It will be great if your blog has more than one or two authors. For this, enable Guest Blogging on your blog.
  • Response Time : Your pages should index and load quickly.

ALSO RECOMMENDED : HOW TO: Get Your Site Featured In Google News

Some Tips To Get Featured :

#1 – Always produce original content with descriptive titles. Give some link love to Techmeme, which drives some traffic.

#2 – If you have written or published an unique and different kind of article, like Mark Zuckerberg (CEO, Facebook) went to a local barber shop. Then you can send an email directly to the Techmeme editors at editorial@techmeme.com. They will be surely interested! 😀

#3 – If you are re-blogging something, like linking to a news story, then chances are pretty less. The editorial team will rarely include you in Techmeme. Meanwhile, if you can provide some unique context that is missing from the current Techmeme conversation, you can get included.

#4 – If your blog/website is already indexed by Techmeme, then you don’t need to work very hard to get onto Techmeme. Just do your usual blogging stuffs. Here the chances are pretty high that your article will automatically become part of the relevant conversation happening at Techmeme.

# 5 – Follow TechmemeFH or Techmeme for your sake!! Also recommended to follow Gabe Rivera, the guy behind Techmeme.

#6 – To send a tip to Techmeme, just include “Tip @Techmeme” or “Tip @TechmemeFH” in your message along with the URL of the news story you’d like to appear. Check the below image for example :

HellBlog Techmeme

Note : If you were the first person to tip Techmeme about a story url, your Twitter id will be credited on the homepage of Techmeme if the story is posted. The credit will appear beneath the posted headline, after “Discussion” links. Look for the word “Thanks”:

techmemethanksnoah

Want to know what Gabe recommends?

My recommendations? First, focus on the content. Break news or write original analysis, and do so clearly and concisely, always careful to provide real value to new and existing readers. And use descriptive titles. Second, enable discovery of your post. If necessary, though emails, links, trackbacks, IMs, etc.

And here is the link love part, mentioned #1.

Now if your blog or news article sends a moderate level of traffic to one of my sites, it will be evaluated for inclusion.
