These days the best alarm system you can use to protect your house is a smart system. It uses wifi and the Internet of Things (IoT) to connect multiple devices for a more holistic system than just an alarm.
There is just one glaring problem with this type of system. And that is they can be prone to hacking. Which is the opposite of what the security is supposed to do. Unless you take some time to create a hack proof security system.
It isn’t difficult, and you don’t need to be particularly tech savvy to do it, but with the help of this guide, you should be able to create a strong system. Ultion locks have a sensor that can detect an attack, and when that detection happens, the lock engages and cannot be unlocked no matter how many attempts are tried. You don’t want to be swapping one problem for another so make sure you follow these steps on cyber security to keep your system secure.
1 – Protect your router
The weak link in your smart system is the router. If it can be hacked then your passwords can be intercepted and somebody can use this to either gain access to your sensitive data or even to disable the security system and break into your house.
It pays in a lot of ways to take the time to keep your router secure.
The first thing to do is to encrypt the router. This is a system that makes it almost impossible for somebody to intercept the transmissions from your router that they can exploit. And it only takes a few steps to enable this and requires no coding. Use your router manual to access the preferences and find where you can set it to be encrypted. It only takes a few minutes and is the most important thing that you can do.
Another is to make your network invisible. People roam neighborhoods looking for wifi networks and yours won’t come up when they do so they will simply pass by.
2 – Change passwords
This seems so basic that it is almost not worth mentioning, but the reality is that it is very effective at securing your security network. Make sure that your wifi network password is auto generated so it can’t be guessed by a hacker. Somebody that you know may have the names of your pets or kids and try using those as a way to gain access. They are the most obvious types of passwords.
If you auto generate a password it can’t be guessed. And you should change it every three months or so.
3 – Make a separate network
Having your computers, devices and your security system on the same network is a way that makes it easier for a hacker to get access. For instance, if your phone is lost or stolen, it is an easy way for somebody to then get into your network.
It would be terrible if they are able to access your network and steal your data from your devices, but if your security system is on a different network then it will still be safe. In addition to this, you should have that network on a virtual private network (VPN) that regulates what devices are able to access the network.
4 – Regularly monitor activity
Your networks will log any activity such as sign ins and remote access being granted. Make sure that you check these logs occasionally so that you are aware of any attempts to get in whether they are successful or not. If you know there have been logins or that your system has been under attack then you know you need to be extra vigilant to keep it secure.
