HOW TO: Get Logoless YouTube Player

YouTube Player LogoNow YouTube provides us the option to remove their cute branding logo in the control bar of the YouTube video player. You just need to make a minor change.

At the end of the video URL in your embed code, just add the code ?modestbranding=1 and the player will show without the YouTube logo in the control bar.

<iframe width=”620″ height=”370″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/oFTfAdauCOo?modestbranding=1” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Below I have embedded Cars 2 Trailer from Disney Pixar – Without and With Logo.

Though they have the option to remove the logo, still there will be a small “YouTube” text label which will show up in the upper-right corner of a paused video when you hover over the player.

HOW TO: Increase Your Site’s Conversions : Back To The Basics

Site ConversionOnline shopping has become a retail stronghold in the recession; in spite of falling retail figures offline, more and more shoppers have turned to the internet for wider selections and better deals.  A study by Forrester Research shows that 69% of European internet users over the age of 18 purchase products through online vendors; over half of those do so monthly.

Nonetheless, online store owners are familiar with the many hassles of trying to get people to purchase from the internet.  In spite of the best intentions, many shop owners have a hard time getting conversions.  What are some of the reasons that a full third of internet users don’t want to shop online?

  • Security concerns.  Most customers who don’t shop online say they fear sharing their credit card information over the internet.
  • Shipping issues.  Customers don’t like paying high shipping prices.  They also fear their items will be damaged during shipping, get lost in the mail,  or simply not be sent at all.
  • Returns.  Some users worry that returns will be a pain. This is due to having to schedule time to go to the post office, as well as having to pay the return shipping.
  • Customer service problems.  Some people are upset if there is no live person who can be contacted during a transaction online. They don’t want to wait for an email.

How can you, as the owner of an ecommerce site, address and remedy these issues?

  • Lower your shipping prices.  You may be surprised – check into flat rate shipping options if you haven’t already.  Or – if you’re already using flat rate shipping but your items are small and lightweight, consider switching to standard envelopes.  If you still can’t bring down your shipping costs, consider altering your item prices or offering free shipping as incentives during high volume shopping seasons.
  • Clear Terms of Service Page. Include a clear terms of service page for your shipping and returns policies.  Make sure people know exactly what to expect as far as how you will be shipping, when you will be shipping, and how long it will take.  Explain the reasons a customer can or cannot return an item and whether you will return their money or provide them store credit.
  • Security Matters. To address security concerns, add a guarantee of safe shopping; offer to compensate users for unauthorized purchases. Having a third party icon (like PayPal’s icon) on your page can help ensure shoppers that there is a third party arbitrating their transaction and thus protecting their interests.
  • Give customers a clear way to contact you.  Live help is best if you can staff it; if not, make it very obvious how to contact you and when customers can expect a reply.  Welcome communication and feedback.

As you might expect, people who don’t normally shop online are generally less tech-savvy. Consequently, there trust of online sales, something that’s relatively foreign, is limited – but they still have the same desires for security, convenience, selection and communication as everyone else.  If you cater to these people using some of the suggestions outlined above, you will not only convert more customers but increase your sales to the people who are already purchasing goods online.

HOW TO: Get Your Site Featured On Bing News

Bing NewsBing News (previously Live Search News) is a part of Microsoft’s Bing search engine. It is a search engine and aggregator specifically for news articles through a variety of trusted and credible internet news sources, including New York Times, Washington Post and Reuters (via Wikipedia).

Bing News is one of the popular News Aggregators owned by Microsoft and it gets good number of visitors everyday. Other popular News Aggregators include Yahoo! News, Google News, and Techmeme. All these sites have some option to submit your site, but Bing is quite different. Getting your site listed on Bing News is not an easy thing since they don’t provide a direct option to submit sites (as of now).

Getting Featured On Bing News [Simple Steps]

#1 – Though there is no direct option, Brett Yount (Ex-employee of Bing) from the Bing Webmaster Center said the way to be included in Bing News is a manual process. You just need to email bns@microsoft.com and wait for their reply.

Suppose if you didn’t get a reply from them, Brett suggests this,

“There should be confirmation from the review team. If you did not get one, I suggest emailing them again.”

And you will probably get a reply like this from Bing,

“Please be assured that your submission is now noted and will be considered in a fair qualifying process.”

#2 – Submit your site to Bing, if you haven’t. Because first we want their web crawler, BingBot, to be familiar with our blogs URL and permalinks. Also recommended to submit to popular search engines.

#3 – Submit your Sitemap to Bing. Make use of Bing Webmaster Tools to improve your site’s SEO, submit your sites and XML-based Sitemaps to Bing

Maximize The Potential Of Your Blog With 3 Easy Tricks

Literally anyone out there can sign up for a blog these days, so how do you set yourself apart from the masses? A blog can serve a number of purposes, especially if you are hoping to increase your traffic as an online business. In fact, if you have a standard e-commerce website, it is to your advantage to create an additional blog, which will help you to rank for a number of keywords more easily, and it will also add more pages to your website that are easily indexed by Google. Win-win!

Still, once you have created your blog for your company, you may be wondering where to go from there. Instead of twiddling your thumbs and hoping the blog will take care of itself, here are some top tricks to maximize your blog and get noticed:

Blogging

  • #1 – Guest Blog : If you are a blogger, you must take the opportunity to guest blog. (You can also try HBB)This can be done in one of two ways. First, you can offer your content to other bloggers within your niche, who will publish it for you with a link going back to your website. This process is highly beneficial to further ranking your website because links from other valuable blogs will give you authority in the eyes of Google. Even better, if you give a guest blog post to a blog that has a large reader base like this blog, those readers will be prone to check out your website if you are in a related niche, and you may gain more readers and traffic as a bonus. Otherwise, you can choose to exchange guest blogs with another blogger in your niche, which will provide the same benefit as above because that blog’s reader base will be likely to visit your blog to read the new guest blog post. You should also look on services like myblogguest.com for finding guest bloggers. If you have solid and informative content on your blog, these same readers may come back again and again or even subscribe to your RSS feed!

  • #2 – Stimulate Conversation : If you want to get more people involved in your blog, you must stimulate reader conversation! This starts by creating provocative and controversial posts – negative or positive – that people will be likely to comment on to start a conversation. It is also helpful to ask questions and respond to any comments that are made so people know you are listening. Additionally, one of the best ways to stimulate conversation on your blog is by using plug-ins like Keyword Luv and Comment Luv. As a warning, these plug-ins will attract serious spam that you will have to filter out, but they will also reward your readers for participating in conversation. Keyword Luv allows commenters to include their targeted keywords as a Do Follow link in the comment box, which will only be published if they provide a relevant and informative comment. Comment Luv serves the same purpose by fetching the feed from the commenter’s website when they leave a comment to bring up their last blog post title, which will be displayed below their comment on your blog. This will again reward a reader for providing something relevant to a blog conversation by subtly promoting their own blog at the same time.

  • #3 – Social Media : As an online business, it is imperative that you have social media profiles on a number of different websites, with Facebook and Twitter being the bare minimum. The benefit to using social media profiles when it comes to your blog is that you can synchronize social media with your blog so that each new blog you post will be simultaneously updated to your Twitter and Facebook followers. If it is an interesting post, they will be likely to circulate it to their followers, and so on and so on and so on. Brilliant!

These best blogging tips are just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, yet you may feel overwhelmed embarking on this task all alone. Luckily, you don’t have to because many of the menial blogging tasks can be outsourced to your virtual assistant, like monitoring comments, adding plug-ins, and managing the design and layout of your blog. This will leave you the time to focus on the more important tasks at hand of writing stellar content, making connections with other guest bloggers, and even hiring new writers and co-authors for your blog so that it becomes a legitimate resource in your online niche market. The truth is that quality cannot be overlooked when it comes to blogging, and the effort you put into your blog will be worthwhile by drawing even more traffic to your company’s website!

WordPress: Allow Contributors To Upload Files

Lot of contributors suffered from this problem. They can’t able to upload any kind of files through their dashboard. I also got lot of complaints regarding this. So just thought of sharing this.

Actually there are two ways to allow contributors to upload files. Either you can try a WordPress plugin (Recommended) or try some coding.

But personally I prefer the WordPress plugin method. Through which you can increase the capabilities of contributors.

A Contributor is somebody who can write and manage their posts but not publish them.

1. WordPress Plugin – Capability Manager

Capability Manager
Check Upload Files In Capabilities for Contributor | User role

#1. Install and activate Capability Manager Plugin.

#2. Go to Users | Capabilities.

#3. Select Capabilities for Contributor|User role.

#4. Check Upload Files and Save.

2. Paste the following Code in functions.php

if ( current_user_can('contributor') && !current_user_can('upload_files') )
add_action('admin_init', 'allow_contributor_uploads');
function allow_contributor_uploads() {
$contributor = get_role('contributor');
$contributor->add_cap('upload_files');
}

Just paste the above code snippet in your theme’s functions.php file and for thesis users, just copy and paste the code in custom_functions.php file.

First of all, make sure you take a backup of functions.php or custom_functions.php file before implementing this tutorial. Play it safe.

HOW TO: Create 301 URL Redirection

URL redirection is also called URL forwarding, URL shortener, domain redirection and domain forwarding.

Why to redirect a website?

For Similar Domain Names :

301 RedirectionA user accessing a particular domain name may type the wrong spelling of it. For example, consider www.hellboundbloggers.com and www.helboundbloggers.com. Here one ‘l’ is missing in the second domain name. Organizations often register these mis-spelled and redirect them to the correct domain name. Another example is redirecting domains for reserving TLDs (Top Level Domains). The addresses hellboundbloggers.com and hellboundbloggers.net could both redirect to a single domain, such as hellboundbloggers.org.

Moving a website to a new domain :

A webpage or website can be redirected for many reasons like the website might need to change its domain name or the author of that website might move his or her pages to a new domain.

HTTP Status codes for redirect :

  • 300 Multiple Choices  (like offering different languages)
  • 301 Moved Permanently
  • 302 Found (like temporary redirect)
  • 303 See Other (For results of CGI-Scripts)
  • 307 Temporary Redirect

Common Methods for Redirecting A Website [URL Redirection]
