SEO: 9 Website Design Errors You Should Not Make

SEO website design errorsDiscover 9 errors in terms of SEO that are, again, some web designers and web developers do.

1. Homepage “Splash”-type

How many times have you seen it, a home page only consists of an image with a link “Click Here” to enter. Worse, the link “Enter” can be embedded in an object of flash type object, prohibiting search engine’s spiders to follow the link.

If you do not care about the ranking of your site, then fine. If instead, SEO is important to you, then that is a major mistake. In fact, it’s a safe bet that the home page of your site or page has the highest ranking, which is the most accessed by search engine spiders. The internal pages of your site will not appear in the results of search engine if you do not allow them to access it with clean URLs.

The home page of your site, at a minimum, contains the words of your semantics as well as links to the main pages of your site immediately.

2. A non-parsable Flash Menu

Many designers and developers make the error of designing Flash menus in order to incorporate effects. It may sound great but it is never for the search engines, the links in the menu will simply not followed by search engine spiders.

3. Content in images or Flash

A spider is a bit like a text-mode web browser, such as Lynx. It can not read the contents published in an image or a Flash object. Many designers make the error of taking the text, and often put very significant content for instance keywords, in images or Flash container.

4. On a dose-Ajax

Many developers make this mistake, wanting to impress the visitors to a website by a massive use of Ajax, especially in terms of navigation, but did you recognize that this is a major problem in terms of SEO? Why? This is due to Ajax itself, charging while the content dynamically. This makes the terribly complex task to spiders, but also at the site indexing.

There is another disadvantage to point the finger with Ajax. There is no change in URL; it means that no URL distinguished from each page. How do you share the link to a friend?

5. The Versioning theme

For some reasons of their own, some designers like to implement different versions of their theme/template in separate redirected to the proper directories. Regularly changing the root of your theme might make you lose your ranking. Attention!

6. “Click Here” as link text

You certainly see a lot of sites offering you “Click Here” or “Learn More”. I must say that, it’s not good! Because is meaningless to be listed on these terms. But I think you want to use SEO to your site otherwise. If SEO is important to you, put your keywords or page title as link text. The title of the page is often better to use because, after all, it’s already be optimized for SEO, right? This will save you relevance.

One detail that is important, change the text related to your links, it should not be that Google thinks you tried the Spam-indexing.

7. The Title Tag, common mistakes

A similar title on all pages:

All pages of your site with a single <title> must contain your keywords. Lots of designers are missing this by giving all pages of your site with the same name.

This is a little bit to say that all search engines deal your site with a single subject, as all tickets are worth.

Exceed the limit of 65 characters:

Some bloggers like to talk about their lives in the title, but for what purpose? In any case, the results of search engines will skip all that exceed 65 characters, so as not to exceed this is always cleaner.

Stuff the title keyword:

Another mistake is regularly committed to shield the title of your page’s keywords, unconnected to others. Did you know that it can take you to the Sand Box? It is many times said that the same thing will not develop your SEO. Think of the Change.

8. The Alt Attribute Empty your Images

Always explain your images with the alt attribute. The alt attribute is used by web browsers to the blind. And guess what! Search engines can’t see your images alt attribute allows the engine to know the relevance of your given image of the surrounding text. Moreover, by properly using the alt attribute, it’s a safe bet that your SEO will improve in Google Image.

9. Funny URLs

Most blog platforms or CMS have an advanced URL management system, but do not take advantage all sites. A good URL will also be very interesting for your visitors and for search engines. It is also a location where your keywords should place.

Finally, I would love you to share your experiences. Is there anything else you would add? What is or isn’t working for you? Any tales? Any warnings? Anything you would like to share…? Please do!

You Will Destroy Your Blog With These SEO Mistakes

What is bad SEO tricks and why it matters?

seo mistakes avoidWell, a greatly written blog does not mean anything if no one knows of your existence. That’s the reason why bloggers had been trying to figure out ways to get to the top of the search engine results, ever since the early days when search engines were first introduced. Being at the top usually guarantees more traffic to the blog. This is the essence of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Today, there are tons of tips easily available on how to improve your SEO.

However, in this article, rather than tell you what you should be doing, let’s take a candid look at what you should NOT be doing. Yes, there are unethical tricks that some bloggers use to try to increase their sites’ ranking. You should avoid them. Well, at least you should, if you intend to stay around longer on cyberspace! Here are some of them.

Keyword Stuffing

Search engines conduct searches based on keywords requested by users and attempt to match them with appropriate sites. This led to “keywords stuffing” by bloggers.

This technique used to be a very popular technique many years ago. The idea is to get as many keywords, albeit some being unrelated, stuffed into the post. Other ways include camouflaging keywords in the same color as the sites’ background as well as reducing the font size to very small.

This trick will eventually be caught by search engines’ bots and the site removed from the index.

What you should do: Don’t stuff, just sprinkle your keywords and make sure they make sense.

Cloaking

Another sneaky trick some webmasters used was to show separate content to the search engines crawlers and to the site’s visitors. It was meant to increase the site’s ranking through usage of targeted keywords and then misled search users to click on their link.

It would probably work in the beginning but do be warned that search engines are pretty smart these days and will detect it sooner or later and ban the site.

What you should do: Create quality posts with well-researched information. Earn your visitors’ respect and don’t destroy your hard work by being impatient!

Link Buying

Was popular and still is. Many are still buying links from high traffic sites to improve their own sites’ ranking. There’s lots of debate about whether this is right or wrong but let’s leave that to another post.

Instead, let’s look at what search engines would do if they detected this method on your site. They would not take it into consideration when calculating the ranking. It has been reported that they have even banned sites because of this. Though not all are being caught but it pays not to take the risk.

What you should do: Put your money into other more effective Marketing Strategies.

Links Swapping

Right, this last one is not exactly deceiving. When I started Blogging many many years ago, it was THE thing to do. I put your link on your site and you put mine on yours. I did find it somewhat phony especially when I didn’t quite fancy that blog. But it did work in terms of SEO.

Today, this is not so effective anymore in raising your page ranking. Search engines just don’t take much note of it in their search algorithms, and if done too much they will de-index your page!

What you should do: You can still link to other sites. But now, do link to those that are relevant to your topic or business and if you think your readers would benefit from them too eg a reliable source of information. If you could get another credible site to link yours without you needing to link them back, that’ll would be absolutely great!

SEO these days are more about creating a more informative and relevant surfing experience for your readers. So don’t play dirty.

As a powerful Jedi Master once advised “This is a dangerous time for you, when you will be tempted by the Dark Side…” OK, this may be overly dramatic but you get what I mean. Avoid bad SEO practices and say no to black hats techniques. You may find that the journey is slightly longer to get to the top (of search results) BUT you will definitely find yourself staying at the top longer.

5 SEO Mistakes To Be Careful Of

SEO MistakesWhen I first started building websites of my own many moons ago, I read almost everything I could lay my hands on about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I could foresee the importance of search engines then and wanted to be ahead of competition. Soon, I knew by heart the methods needed to improve my websites’ search engine rankings by leaps and bounds, or so I thought.

Unfortunately, not all my websites were able to achieve great SEO as well as I had desired. Some websites were ranked pretty high and were sitting on the first page of search engine results for years; while others did not even make it to page two. Looking back, I saw that I had committed countless mistakes in my quest to SEO my websites. And through the years, I had learned from my mistakes and had managed to put these websites back on track, though it did take some time. Today, I have put together a list of 5 common SEO mistakes to be careful of, that I would be sharing with you, so you don’t have to learn it the hard way like I did.

Mistake #1: Wrong Keywords

Choosing the appropriate keywords is the most important part of the SEO process and yet the most common SEO mistake ever. Most webmasters, regardless of beginners or experts, commit the crime of applying keywords that THEY think best suit the website, instead of what keywords the search engine users pick to look for information offered by these websites. Most of them failed to realize that their keywords are not necessarily the ones that their targeted readers choose to search with. So do ensure that you do keywords research first and one way of doing so is through Google’s free Google Keyword Tool.

A tip here is to concentrate on keywords that have lesser competition and higher monthly searches. This way, you get less competitive sites but comparatively higher traffic, thus elevating your chances of ranking high in the results page.

Mistake #2: Keywords Saturation

I’m sure you have come across some sites which seemed to be saturated with the same keywords. Some webmasters believe that by stuffing the website with the keywords over and over again, the search engines would be able to detect them better. While this may hold some truth few years ago, it is not the case these days. In fact, most popular search engines today would penalize websites that have excessive keywords and poor content.

Regardless of whether it was done intentionally or unintentionally, cramming keywords in the websites or articles should be avoided. Do ensure that you produce quality articles and not quantity keywords only!

Mistake #3: Duplicating Content

Seen an article in another website and think that it’s so well written that you are tempted to just “borrow” it for your website? Don’t even think about it. Not only would search engines drop your site from being indexed but you would also be committing the ultimate crime in writing i.e. plagiarism. It is not worth the trouble.
You may be able to get away with it once or twice but what happens after that? You have to think long term and you definitely have to put in the effort.

It is not easy to come up with quality articles and sometimes you may encountered writer’s block but do persevere through it and your readers will come to appreciate it. So will the search engines.

Mistake #4: Not Doing Any Site-keeping

Like housekeeping, you have to consistently monitor and manage your website’s SEO progress. This is because search engines are changing their algorithms every so often and in order to maintain your high ranking, you would need to constantly put in SEO efforts besides updating your websites.

Mistake #5: Using Black Hat Techniques

Most people are tempted by the less-effort and quick-result offered by black hat SEO techniques like invisible text, doorway pages and overstuffed unrelated keywords. These are short-term and therefore, should be avoided. Bear in mind that search engines are improving their techniques too and will heavily penalize websites found to be using black hat techniques. Do not every use any black hat SEO techniques!

While many knew about the importance of SEO in generating traffic to a website, not many would take the trouble to SEO their websites. But if you are serious about internet marketing, I suggest that you put in the effort to learn more about SEO as well as the above list of mistakes to be careful of. Armed with this knowledge, you would be able to build a great SEO strategy and with some patience and effort, your website would soon be ranking high in search engines results.
