Enable Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) On Your Blog

Install this WordPress plugin called ‘AMP‘. This is WordPress’s (Automattic) official plugin for Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). Few months back WordPress announced their support for AMP to improve performance of the mobile web.

If you have activated this plugin, then almost all the posts (not pages at the moment I guess) automatically gets AMP-compatible versions. You can access those versions by appending /amp/ to the end your blog post URLs.

You should remember that this won’t be visible to all your mobile visitors. AMP consumers such as Google Search takes care of this and they convert the posts.

Why Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Are Important?

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are basically a skin version of your blog layout. It gives a minimalistic layout with major focus only on the content. We all know Google considers your website loading speed as one of the key factors for search rankings.

I decided to test the loading speed of our blog post and compare the same with an accelerated mobile page. For this, we picked a blog post with has detailed content with images and videos. We tested our Grammarly review post on Pingdom tools. As you can see below, our default blog post gets a loading speed of 4.20 seconds (it was a big post), whereas the AMP gets 1.95 seconds. Almost half the loading speed in this case. The difference is very essential here, considering the increase in mobile usage these days.

Without And Without AMP Speed Check

You can see how the default mobile version of our blog post looks (vs) the AMP version of our blog post looks. They put the content in their optimized framework. Google will soon announce ad support for AMPs. This is not the final look of the AMPs, but you will get the opportunity to customize it according to your blog’s original design layout soon I guess.

  3. I have had serious problems while activating Accelerated mobile pages on my blogs so I suggest not to activate it, rather have your own theme or use WP-Touch. WP-Touch works just great and it also serves the purpose with a beautiful design and everything works so nicely.
