When Will Be The Next Domain Authority Update?

We are planning to feature a question every week on HBB and provide the answer as a blog post. We get plenty of questions via our Facebook group, Facebook page, Blog Comments and Emails, so we decided to pick some interesting questions and feature them here with a solution/suggestion. And here we go.

I read your blog post about “DA & PA“, I’m improving my blog for better scores, but how often do they update their scores? For Alexa rank, I check the widget daily, and it changes almost every day. – Abhishek Kumar, Kolkata

When Will Be The Next Domain Authority Update

So the overall question is – When exactly does the Domain Authority (DA), Page Authority (PA), MozRank and MozTrust update?

All these metrics below to Moz and when exactly they update the scores/ranks? I decided to ask the official people regarding this to confirm my views. I pinged Moz on Twitter.

Next Domain Authority Update – “When”?

The official Moz Twitter profile answered us – “Our DA gets updated when our Mozscape index is released”. Don’t need to be confused here, Mozscape is Moz’s API for analyzing metrics like DA and PA. Maybe it’s something related to their algorithm, and they update it accordingly. But, how often?

My 2nd question was, since I understood ‘when’ they update, I asked them ‘how often’ they try to update the Domain Authority (DA) and other metrics. So as expected, it might be positively a monthly update, which is pretty decent IMO. If you take PageRank, we will have no idea when it’ll get updated.

So if you are waiting for the next Domain Authority update, then it’s not days or weeks, but once a month mostly. If you have no idea about Domain Authority or Page Authority, then you can learn about them here.

Domain Authority (DA): How To Check & Improve It?

Domain authority, as the name suggests, is a measure of the potential of the website to get noticed in search engine rankings. It is a rating given to websites, on a scale of 0 to 100 and takes into account several metrics like Alexa Rank, Google Page Rank, the traffic flow to the site, backlinks generated by it and its comments.

According to seoMoz, authority numbers are high level metrics that attempt to answer the question “How strong are this page’s/site’s links in terms of helping them rank for queries in Google.com?”

A higher rating is indicative of a better domain authority.

How exactly is Domain Authority calculated?

The domain authority of a website is a collective measure of its performance on several fronts due to which it is not possible to lay down the exact procedure for calculating DA. In all, more than 150 factors and signals sent out by Google algorithm are taken into account before a website’s domain authority is calculated.

There are three main factors that influence DA. They are:

1. Domain age

In an age when thousands of websites are created every day, and an equal number of them die too because of various reasons, DA serves to indicate how trustworthy the website in question is.

Obviously, the older the website, the more will be its domain authority because search engines are more likely to repose their trust and faith in older websites.

2. Domain popularity

This is a comparison of inbound links to the website vis-à-vis its outbound links.

Inbound links to any website indicate that it contains useful and reliable information. Website owners, bloggers and SEO experts who know about link juice might be able to appreciate and understand the concept faster than those who are unaware of these terms.

The higher the ratio of inbound links to its outbound links, the greater will be its domain authority. Here it is important to point out that the quality of inbound links is as important as the quantity. It is essential to build ‘good’ links.

3. Domain size

The more the number of indexed pages on a website, the greater will be its DA. That is probably because a larger content base generates, more often than not, a larger number of inbound links to the website merely by virtue of its size.

So, the thumb rule is that if you are a website owner:

The older the domain, the higher the domain authority. The more the number of backlinks to your website, the higher your domain authority, and the more the content on your website, the higher will be your domain authority.

How can I influence my domain authority?

Though it would not be right to say that it is impossible to influence DA, doing so is not an easy task.

As described above, an old website with lots of content and back links would generate a higher DA.
But how can I push up the measure of my DA to improve my credibility?

These are a few things that a website owner or blogger can do to increase his DA:

1. Guest Blogging: Do lots of guest posts, because the links generated by guest posts are extremely valuable. Try to get at least 1 dofollow link per guest post, though most bloggers would be happy to offer 2 for quality content.

2. Blog Commenting: Comment heavily, preferably on the blogs in the same niche. Again, prefer to comment on blogs which give dofollow links for comments. Most SEO experts would suggest you to do at least 15 comments after each post. You can easily locate comment luv enabled blogs on the keywords of your choice by typing [comment luv + keyword] in the Google search bar.

For instance, if the main keyword for your last post was ‘Samsung galaxy S3’, you can find out other comment luv enabled blogs writing on the same keyword by typing [comment luv+ Samsung galaxy S3] in the google search bar.

3. Social Bookmarking: Do lots of social bookmarking. Learn how to use Social Networking & Bookmarking for Blog Promotion.

4. Forums: Participate actively in discussions at forums.

5. Article Directories: Submit articles to directories which give you 1-2 dofollow links per submission. Check the Importance of Article Directories in SEO.

6. Press Releases: Distributing press releases is also a good idea. Learn how to write a Good Press Release.

Now while generating enough links is essential, it is of utmost importance to see the QUALITY of links that you are creating. Generating irrelevant links or bad links could do you more harm than good.

Try to get links from authority domains to push up the level of your DA in a shorter period of time. This is because authority domains usually do not give too many back links!

Do not get links from porn sites or gambling sites. If you do so, your website/blog could get hit and pushed down in search engine rankings as well.

Though there is no doubting the fact that a website or blog with greater DA commands more respect, the fact is that most blogs are unable to cross the 50 notch barrier.

To talk more on building authority blogs, we need to understand some simple issues, so that the blog that you create must feel its in command.

Some of the top issues that you need to make sure that the your blog is in authority:

1. Design and Feel

Its the first impression about the site, always that matter. Blogging is all about content, but that content which you create is to be presented perfectly. You can always eat, but it does matter how it tastes, right? Well Either you make a great design or you hire an expert to do the same. The design must smooth the visitor and make him feel that he’s really into your site.

Make sure you have breadcrumbs for your blog or site, so that navigation is made simple and easy. I would recommend having a magazine style design, as always people prefer – bigger the better. Have sufficient widgets, don’t make it too clumsy or too thin, it just has to feel right. I would recommend launching a site after all the design modifications.

Most important thing about designing about you blog is your blog name. When you try to get a good domain name, obviously get a niche name. And when you get one, then you design a awesome looking logo. As this logo will help you brand your site. And branding is very important issue when it comes to marketing. Now Its not just about writing content, but also expressing views and reviews about your niche in a nicely manner. With great content comes great responsibility. Handling so much of content is a tedious task, you will need a moderator to monitor the quality of the content you publish.

Another good question is, what should be your publishing frequency of your content? It again depends on how well your niche is. Say for example if its an Android niche, then you get host news, every now and then. Then you can create content about latest news. I normally would recommend publishing at least 5 articles per day so that visitors get a feeling that this is huge site with humungous resources. Its the mentality of people that matters, you obviously go to a big mall, rather go to a small grocery shop.

Make sure that when you start your publishing frequency to be 5 per day, then you can keep up with the same through out your blog life. Sometimes, it so happens that you can find no information about your niche, and you can’t create content, then it will be a loss. For an authority blog to survive, feeding content is a must.

3. Optimize for Search Engine

When you now have a great design and logo, the next step you need to focus is on content. With great content, its time for some optimization. Search engines are the quality inspectors, we can’t cheat them or bribe them. Search engines are so loyal that they help us grow better. So, its very important that we need to write for audience and optimize it for search engines.

Smart blogging comes only with smart search engine optimizations. So, make sure you follow search engine algorithms and updates. Any changes in search engines, can make variations in your traffic.

4. Promotion and Marketing

Content create becomes popular only with promotions, sites like Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon might help. But we need a game changer, so we would opt for doing guest posting on other sites. Its just subtle to mark your presence on other sites, than just commenting about your site on other sites.

Marketing is the key strategy that you need to build and comes only by experience, promotion is one thing, but keep the old content promoted and in motion in another thing, this is where marketing comes into picture. Recycling old content for better use. Because ultimately its the content that visitors are visiting your blog for answers and reviews and for educational purposed.
