Yesterday while I was browsing in Orkut, I found something peculiar in the right sidebar ad. I thought it was just another normal creative advertisement and ignored it many times. But, later I gave a sharp look. Then I came to know the new feature of Orkut called Orkut Promote. This is like a self-advertising platform where advertisers and regular Orkut users can promote their content including photos, videos or text among the Orkut community. Google charges advertisers for promotion while regular Orkut members don’t need to pay any fee for using Orkut promote.

What I can do with Orkut Promote?
- Lets you and your friends share YouTube videos, photos, or text with each other. You can easily spread word of a good video, a cool picture, or some technical news.
- Lets you to share your friends promotions, and they can share yours, so this makes the information or content to become viral.
- Lets you track how many people have seen your promotion, and how many of them have shared it with their friends or trashed it under the my promotions tab.
How to Create Free Promotion?
- Click promote on the left sidebar of your Orkut profile or homepage.
- Enter a title and a comment(description).
- You can add more text, a YouTube video, or one of your public orkut photos.
- After adding different elements to your promotion, the preview box will update to reflect your changes.
- When you are satisfied with your promotion, click create promotion.
Note : Orkut Promote is used by both advertisers and orkut users. So you see advertisements in your promotion box sometimes. You can trash or promote ads in the same way you can do with your friends’ promotions.

Sounds cool! Orkut can be one of the most effective way in promoting, aside from Twitter. Maybe its really worth a try.

The Promotion seems to be a good idea. But inspite of my large frnd list in orkut. there were only around 80 views and 10 clicks for TWO MONTHS period. BTW i reckon it shows promotion to mostly those in our frnd list.
Actually many people were not aware about the Orkut Promote feature.. so they were confused I guess… 🙁
but hardly anyone promote it 🙁

New Orkut design is really cool and clean. I was not so active on Orkut but now I am planning to give it a try. Of course this Promote thing will definitely help me promoting my stuffs over there.
Orkut has now fast browsing and good way of uploading Albums and other stuff. but Sorry to say, it’s still ugly !

Yeah. Google seems to be putting a lot of work into Orkut. I guess they are getting really scared by the fact that now even Indians are switching to Facebook.

Hey pradeep, thats a great notice. Orkut was one of the best social networking site sometime back. After hi5 orkut was the most famous one but due to lack of advanced features and less security to the users profile, many users preferred to give orkut a skip and then facebook came with more advanced, interactive and highly secured features. That made facebook the best social network site, And if you have noticed facebook’s Alexa rank is No.3 That means they are just 2 positions from the top rank. Google is No.1 and Yahoo is No.2 That means facebook has left Msn, Myspace, Youtube and other great sites way back in the scenario. The craze of orkut has gone down a lot So I wonder how much would this feature help them and us.

Good initiative from Google. But I don’t think the Orkut platform will really help in good publicity of your Blog! It is mostly used by Indians and Brazilians. Rather than that, if such a system comes up on Facebook or Twitter then I will me more than happy!

With Facebook and Myspace both having their own advertising platforms, I think this is a great move for Google to try to gain some users. Simply make your product free and see great results.

When they had plans to launch this way back in july, I thought it would be paid. Then something went into their mind: Orkut is dying. Looks like they are trying hard.
I think it is good… to see something for free in Google atmosphere.. 🙂
This Google initiative could have prevailed but Facebook came in between and Ripped Orkut apart..
and Advertising on Facebook is very costly.
