HOW TO: Get Your Site Listed In DMOZ Directory

The Open Directory Project (ODP), also known as Dmoz, is a multilingual open content directory of World Wide Web links. It is owned by Netscape, but it is constructed and maintained by a community of volunteer editors (via Wikipedia).

If you wish to have good page rank and search engine traffic, then you should try DMOZ. This is one of the most important directories out there.

First check whether your site is capable of listing. Sites will not be simply listed there. If your site contains little or no original content, then you can’t get listed.

Some Things To Keep In Mind Before Submitting :

#1 – Sites with overlapping and repetitive content won’t be listed.

#2 – Do not disguise your submission and submit the same URL more than once.

Example : https://hellboundbloggers.com/ and https://hellboundbloggers.com/about/

#3 – Web addresses that redirects to another address should be avoided.

#4 – Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.

#5 – If you site has Adult content, then submit to the appropriate category under Adult.

#6 – Don’t submit sites consisting largely of affiliate links.

#7 – Do not submit your site more than once in the directory.

#7 – If you are lucky enough, your site would have already been listed in DMOZ directory, so search in the directory before submitting.

Steps For Submitting Your Site In DMOZ Directory :

#1 – Find the Right Category : Find the single best category for your site. You should choose a relevant category since sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed. Some categories do not have “suggest URL”, so you should find some other relevant category.

#2 – Suggest URL : After selecting the category, go directly to that category on dmoz.org and then click “suggest URL.”

Suppose if your site falls under ‘Category : Internet : Resources’ then go there and click ‘suggest URL’ link at the top navbar.

Suggest URL DMOZ

Now you need to fill a simple site submission form.

There you need to enter the Site URL, Title of Site, Site Description, and Your Email Address. That’s all.

Note : Site Description should not be promotional. It should be an objective and well written description.

An ODP editor will review your submission to determine whether to include it in the directory. Depending on factors such as the volume of submissions to the particular category, it may take several weeks or more before your submission is reviewed.

And if your site is not accepted, DMOZ says this,

We are not a search engine and pride ourselves on being highly selective. We don’t
accept all sites, so please don’t take it personally should your site not be accepted.

  1. Its like, submit and forget because DMOZ is already crowded and they take hell lot of time to consider a website. If you are lucky enough then you website will get listed within weeks otherwise there is no fixed time for them.

    • Obviously Jasmine, it must be already there by now. I was reading a post about Bluehost on your blog, your site's PR is 6, it is indeed an authority site on web hosting. Great info in there. Haven't you submitted to it yet?

  8. @ All : I guess I need to agree on the part ‘hard to get listed’, but DMOZ will soon update their listings since I can see several dead links there. Guess they’ll make it easier. Cheers. 😉

  10. Fore getting approved in DMOZ we all should form a union of bloggers & SPAM ‘DMOZ’ word in all out blogs. Only then there is atleast 2% chance of getting approved in DMOZ.

Nowadays people have lost hope in DMOZ. Thats the truth!

  15. I dont know who edits the categories but I have had problems getting sites indexed in the seo, internet marketing, etc categories.
I suspect that competitors are editing these categories and they don’t let new sites in there easily.
