Xbox 360 USB Storage On The Way

Written by in Technology - Print This Post

If you were thinking of switching from your Xbox 360 to any other device just because storage options then you might just need to hold on, Yeah ! Microsoft’s Major Nelson has confirmed the arrival of USB Storage to Xbox 360 pretty soon.

According to Major Nelson the software update that will make this fascinating feature of USB storage work in your Xbox is due on April 6, leaving gamers only a weeks time to rely on the memory cards and hard drives for system storage expansion–at least if they are happy with 32 GB.

The Gamers might still feel little disappointment, according to sources the size limits on storage formatting are relatively quaint. The end users can only have between 1 GB to 16 GB per USB device, and to add on almost two devices can be used at a time, thus summing up to 32GB max. This makes it clear that you wont be able to use your old memory sticks having less than 1 GB storage, and that you can’t utilize a large and cheap external hard disk drive as an alternative to Microsoft’s existing hard drive options.

It’s important to mention that you can’t use your USB sticks directly on the Xbox. You need to run a small formatting utility using Xbox dashboard. To use standard disks Nelson announced that Microsoft would soon be releasing Xbox-branded SanDisk USB sticks that come ready to be used right out of the box. The SanDisk sticks are set to be released in May, though Nelson could not offer capacities or pricing.

This is, the only new feature that is going into April’s system update. The last big update of Microsoft was done in November 2009.
