Written by Pradeep Kumar in Gadgets & Gizmos - Print This Post
In this article I mentioned 5 hidden utilities with which your thumbdrive/pendrive/flashdrive can perform wonders. Everyone poses a pendrive today.
They became smaller than a matchbox and provide 16GB of storage. It costs not more than Rs.3000. Here are some ways to do magic with your thumb drives.
Saving my pocket money to buy a huge pen drive. Hope blogging helps me to get one!

1. Carry the music environment around you.
Being a music addict hurts you if you cannot able to access to your songs all the time and have to wait till you get home to listen to them. Consider 5 minutes per song, you could fit 400 files which are about 33 hours of music in 2 GB pen drive and naming those 400 songs are quite difficult. Winamp Portable Edition has the solution for it. It has organized media library. It is portable and easily accessible.
2. Carry your applications with you.
Applications can be directly installed to a pen drive and run directly from it without any restrictions or limitations on installation programs.
Portableapps.com provides you software for this. Where you can choose the applications of your desire from the given list.
3. Learn to use Linux.
Wondering about this use? It is easy actually. You can install certain Linux versions in your pen drive and can also operate using it. It is very useful for students who want to learn Linux, but don’t want to install it as their Operating System. There are many Linux versions for pen drive like Knoppix, Damnsmalllinuc, Puppy Linux, Linux Mint , etc. Make a Google Search for this and you will get plenty of websites. My choice is www.pendrivelinux.com. This site is really helpful for non-geeks and non-techies.
4. Creating Windows Vista/Windows 7 install drive.
Note : Your pendrive should be atleast 4GB and your PC should have the BIOS option for booting from the USB.
a) Format the pendrive and partition active.
b) Insert Windows Vista/7 DVD as a administrator.
In the Command Prompt or cmd type
E:\boot\bootsect.exe\nt60X:
Where the drive letters E: is for DVD and X: is for pendrive.
c) Copy the files and folders from the DVD to the pendrive.
d) Plug the pendrive into any PC and boot from it.
5. As a Backup.
If the files you want to backup are few, then why buy an external hard disk drive , try it with a pendrive instead. You can backup these files onto the pendrive manually or usually programs that can automate backups. You can use softwares such as Allway Sync or MS Sync Toy.

I am on a lookout for some cool Antivirus software that can recide on my hard disc and keep me protected. Do you know any?
I use Trend Micro 09 only ! It costed me 2000 bucks !
But I prefer Kaspersky Antivirus ! It will protect your Hard Disk ! Cheers !
If you want anything affordable then go for India made Quick Heal. It’s best for home computers. Otherwise Norton 360 as also got good reviews. And when it comes to free antivirus, AVG 9 has no competition.
Kaspersky and many other are sometimes bulky on the system.
I would suggest that u use Microsoft Security Essential.
Its really effective and extremely light. All you need is original Widows and it works like a charm. Plus its free!!

Don’t worry sunny.. I checked your blog… it contains cool content…
I don’t know whether you are doing this or not.. but .. submit it to as many social networks as social.. I submit my blog posts to almost 10+ social networking sites !
Hey Sunny!
Saw your site. And the problem I found which isn’t attracting traffic to your blog is its looks and appearance.
You need to brand your blog otherwise it will just look like on spam blog. Also increase your post consistency. Maintain categories and tags for better SEO, it’s the easiest tip. And as Pradeep added, provide social bookmark icons, and submit your every article manually first.
Contact me sometime. We may work on to optimize your blog. All the best!
Great ideas, thank you
You are welcome buddy !
Glad it is helpful for you…
I actually carry Linux on my thumb drive. You suggested right, they’re now much more than just storage devices. I use my external HDD for storage and my thumb drive for School Projs and to carry my Linux.
For backup, Pen drive won’t be a good idea. They have chances of data loss if mishandled. I suggest external HDDs for them. Rest all too good, nice list, Pradeep!
I haven’t tried the command propmpt. Next on my agenda.
A little more on UNETbootin software for making windows7 boot disk. Another wonderful tool for boot USB. http://mrpant.com/windows-7-from-usb/
